Listen up Recruiters!

Woman listeningIn today’s job market there are more available positions than there are qualified candidates, and this pretty much applies across all industries. In the recruiting world, this means that we're in what we call a “candidate crazy market”. It pretty much means that top performers are being inundated with recruiting calls, LinkedIn messages and emails about new jobs. Some of these jobs are stellar and can be awesome opportunities to move forward in your career, while others plainly suck. Not knowing which is which, and constantly taking or dodging these calls can be pretty annoying for a candidate!

Because of this, recruiters like myself, have to take on a whole new approach to recruiting top talent:

  1. You have to be very honest about your current situation.
  2. You always have to have the candidates’ best interest in mind.
  3. You have to put yourself in their shoes – how would you personally want to be recruited?

Now there are some processes and rules you have to always live by and follow. For example, if your client doesn’t want you disclose the name of their company right away, you have to respect that. Yet, you can still reach out to top talent and try to differentiate yourself-- even if you happen to be their 8th recruiting call of the day!

Be honest

I think that most important, especially with the growing millennial population, is to be real.  Be honest about why you are calling them, be honest about your own situation and why you have to be careful with your client’s name, and be honest about why you want to help them, and why they should start a relationship with you.

Keep others’ best interest in mind

When I was training for the interview portion of the Miss America pageant, Don Baker taught me that people will like and trust you if you are relatable and likeable. And the only way to be like that is to be your authentic self. Letting people know that you have their best interest in mind, in a sincere way, will take you much further.

Step into their shoes

Being able to step into another person’s shoes and see the process from their viewpoint is an invaluable talent to have. Try to also always treat your clients and candidates the way YOU would like to be treated, and you'll find yourself gaining people’s trust, and they’ll be more likely to pick up the phone the next time you call.

Approach your business, recruiting, and life in general with an open heart and mind, and I guarantee you will find better results! True story.
