Interrupt to Disrupt!

Businessman on the phoneSearch projects are a lot of work in a market where human capital (candidates) are harder and harder to find and attract. As a Life Sciences recruiter, I am literally making phone calls all day, every day… My opening line is usually “Am I catching you at the right time? Am I interrupting you?” 90% of the time people stop what they are doing, and give me 5 minutes of their time, which turns into a 30 minute conversation, followed by a scheduled follow up call--all because they want to continue the conversation and learn more.

Headhunting is an art form-a practice of concentration, research, process, and communicating my reason as to why I'm disrupting someone’s day. Should I apologize in advance for 'interrupting' your day in order to help ‘disrupt’ your career and improve your life? I don’t think so! ...Here's why:

Knowledge is power

Speaking with a headhunter can give you additional insight on what the job market looks like in your niche, what opportunities are available, and most importantly, helps you stay “in-the-know” of compensation ranges for positions similar to yours. Another benefit is whenever you are ready to job hunt, you’ll already have an idea of what hiring managers are looking for, so you can easily tailor your resume

Helps keep you motivated

When you talk with a recruiter, you may hear about opportunities that you hadn’t ever considered or knew existed. Even if you’re not ready to make a move and find a new job, learning about various opportunities may spark new motivation in you, and may prompt you to create new professional goals or learn a new skill or certification. This can all help you become a more competitive candidate, should you ever job hunt in the future.

Could be your dream opportunity

It’s all about timing when it comes to switching jobs. Your dream role could not be open when you’re actively searching. By being open to hearing about opportunities from recruiters, you can learn about positions and companies you’ve always been interested in. If you wait until you’re “ready” to make a move and start actively looking, those jobs will have been long filled and who knows when they’ll be available again.

Gives you a "Plan B"

Even if your job seems secure and things are going well, you never know what could change. Maintaining a relationship with a recruiter can give you security in case anything happens to your current position. If you end up needing to change jobs or find yourself unexpectedly without one, you can find a new opportunity much more quickly, versus starting from scratch and looking for qualified recruiters to connect with.

Many of the people I connect are not looking for new opportunities until my call (interruption) happens. They later always thank me for contacting them. Therefore, learn to view the disruptions in your daily life as potential opportunities--you never know where the next phone call, email or LinkedIn message will take you! ….Now excuse me, someone is “interrupting” me as I try to finish this blog!
