Wormholes and Hiring

WormholeI was recently watching the sci-fi movie, Interstellar, (space travel, wormholes, viable life on other planets, etc.) and thought:  1) way, way too long, at nearly 3 hours  2) time relates to my job helping clients find Life Science talent.

A lengthy recruitment process can be a potential disaster. By taking too long, the employer runs the risk of losing their best candidate, who is quickly becoming disenchanted and tempted by other job offers. This can happen for a few reasons:

  • Slow decision-making by hiring authorities.

  • Overlooking or putting on hold well-qualified candidates while the hiring manager waits to find the “perfect” candidate.

  • They want to hire a candidate, but don’t make it a priority or can’t because of bureaucracy or other internal reasons.

Of course it would be foolish to rush into hiring someone without ensuring it’s fair for both the candidate and the employer. But there’s taking appropriate time… then there’s taking too much time.

I make it my duty to keep the process for my clients and candidates quick and efficient by communicating and setting realistic expectations. Work any other way and I could end up in a wormhole. Whatever that is?
