My Template for Hiring the Ideal Inside Sales Rep

Inside Sales RepsSCORE!!… I found the proverbial needle in the talent haystack. An inside sales rep for my client, a web conferencing software company. It all happened rather quickly and my client was thrilled. When I called them to share the good news, their reply was “…bring me more JUST like her…” My success turned into another job order!

This made me think: If I could create a template of the perfect candidate, what would it look like?

Experience vs. Track Record
I discovered that some of the best people may have less experience or fewer formal skills than what the run-of-the-mill job description requires. But they all have a common trait that makes them great employees-they consistently do more than expected. (Note: I can’t stress enough to candidates how important it is for them to highlight this on their resumes)

Work ethic
Every employee, whether they’re the CEO or an intern, must have a good work ethic to keep the company functioning at its best. A work ethic is a set of moral principles an employee uses in his or her job. Without it, they won’t get far for very long.

Adaptability
Are they quick to adapt and willing to learn with an open mind if suddenly faced with a new market? Are they willing to be an aggressive student and learn the field or market for the new position?

Competitive spirit
What motivates your candidates? You’ll be surprised to find that it’s not always just money. Successful salespeople often have a strong desire to be a top performer, make a large impact at their company or realize their potential for career growth. In other words — to win.

All in
Are they sold on the opportunity with the company- meaning are they excited about what the company is doing, what they stand for, AND are they committed to doing what’s best for the company?

No candidate is perfect, but if you set the bar high and get creative when matching the right talent with the right position, you’ll make a great hire- which is exactly what I plan to (again) do for my client!
