How to Get Hired This Year

For most people, the New Year marks an opportunity to set resolutions, or a chance for a fresh start. Along with updating your vision board and re-evaluating your life in general, the start of a new calendar year is the time to re-evaluate your career.

NEWSFLASH. The job market is on fire. Use this opportunity to start fresh and maybe land a new job. And pretty quickly too.

Below are some tips to make a new job a not-so-distant reality for you:

Start with your RESUME:

Add more detail to your resume. Make sure to note what your past companies do, just in case you’re applying at a company outside your area they will be unfamiliar with the company (especially if you’re seeking a remote position)

Also, don’t forget to customize your resume for each job you apply for.

This may sound like an intimidating idea — after you spend so much time creating a great first resume, the thought of repeating the process for each new job you apply to sounds like a tremendous time-suck. However, the truth is, customizing your resume to each job you apply to is critical if you want to prove that you’re the right person for the job.

Do your RESEARCH:

The internet is your best friend, make sure to research the company and use LinkedIn to do research on whom you'll be talking with.

It is important to have some questions. For example: If you see on LinkedIn and see that the hiring manager recently joined the company, ask them, "Why did you join this company?" That will open a conversation

Tell Your NETWORK You're Looking for a Job:

LinkedIn is a great job search platform. If you’re looking for a new job, you can let recruiters and your network on LinkedIn know you’re open to new job opportunities right from your profile

If you specify the types of job opportunities in which you’re interested and your preferred location, LinkedIn will help your profile show up in search results when recruiters look for suitable job candidates.

Once you land the INTERVIEW, here’s how you NAIL IT.

Take a deep breath, be yourself, answer their questions, but don’t ramble. Be really clear-cut, to the point. And be honest, tell them what you’re looking for in the future so that company is pairing you with the right role.

  • Come prepared to discuss trends in the industry, be sincere with your answers, listen well, and come off as authentic. This will lead to a stronger rapport with the hiring manager and put you on the right path to getting an offer.
  • Learn all about the company, you allow yourself to prepare on what they are looking for. On first interviews, hiring managers will be measuring if you’ll be a cultural match, so do some prep work on what the company’s culture and mission are, along with their values. You’ll go into the interview confident knowing that if they ask you a question about their company, you’ll have an idea of the answer they’re looking for.

If you’ve been applying to jobs, keep an eye on your phone. Especially from an unknown number. Missing that call could cost you the job. Recruiters, hiring managers are going to be calling you and if you can pick up your phone with those unknown numbers, that’s so important.

Don’t wait. Start NOW. It’s all about setting yourself up for a stress-free and successful job search in the coming months.
