How to Clean up Your Company's Hiring Process

Spring CleaningU.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that Americans spend an average of 70 hours cleaning their homes each year. What about your company’s talent acquisition process? Here are some ‘spring cleaning’ tips to help you find, hire and keep the best new employees:

Assess Your Hiring Needs

You won’t be able to make real changes until you identify what needs improvement. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Where is the company heading? What are your goals?
  • What have been your biggest hiring mistakes? What have you learned?
  • What parts of your current hiring process need to improve?
  • What characteristics, experience, and skills do you need to look for in your potential employees?
  • What’s great about your company culture? What’s not so great?

Get your team on the same page

A Salesforce study found that “86% of executives and employees cite lack of collaboration or ineffective communication for workplace failures” Be sure that human resources and line management are on the same page about what is expected of them, timelines and overall goals. After all, both parties have a vested interest in the company’s success.

Take a hard look at your job titles & descriptions

Are your job titles and descriptions grabbing candidates’ attention and giving them a snapshot of what it is like working at your company?  As we say here at Hobson, is there any ‘sizzle’? TIP: Be specific in your explanation of each job and requirements, but don’t leave out what makes your company stand out from your competitors. The best candidates do not have to move, but they WILL for ‘the right reasons’, which often times is the culture and what makes you different!

Improve compensation structure

As a growing organization, it makes sense to continually improve and tweak your compensation strategy.

  • Attract the best candidates: Keeping your salaries competitive will enable you to better attract innovators who will lead your company in the industry.
  • Retain high performance employees: Your comp plan should include more than just a competitive salary. Offering other benefits or non-monetary incentives will not only attract new talent, but will create loyal employees.

Review your internal and third party resources

If your current internal processes are not working, it might be time to look outside for help- such as HR solutions, payroll, training, and of course, recruiters. Invest in the resources that are the most important to your organization’s success, and match up with your best practices.

See? Spring cleaning goes way beyond organizing your garage or cleaning the grout... As you prepare for the new season, make a plan to clean up the clutter that is holding your company back from growing!
