5 Rookie Tips from a Rookie

Rookie at workBeing the “new guy” is never fun, but this initial stage of anything in life-whether it is a career, school, or even joining a new gym, will set the tone for how the rest of your time there will go. Humans are creatures of habit and change can be tough, even intimidating. Here are five pieces of advice from a rookie herself that will hopefully make the new journey at your new job even more exciting:

1.  Learn from those who know. Watch videos. Read. Listen to audiobooks podcasts. The more you can learn from the experts in your field, the better. It’s important to think outside the box and constantly improve yourself all-around. Find ways to motivate yourself on Mondays, be more organized and physically/mentally healthy.

2. Take breaks. If you’re the rookie at your job, chances are you’re somewhat overwhelmed. Taking short breaks throughout the work day can alleviate your stress levels. While it is so important to push yourself, it is as important to take care of yourself. Get up from your desk and take a brief walk around the office or outside, read an article you find interesting or inspiring. This gives you a chance to regroup and refocus. Taking breaks to listen/watch your colleagues do their thing is helpful as well.

3. Talk to everyone. In recruiting, we are calling people all day, many of them being cold calls, not knowing a lot about the person on the other end. You come to realize you don’t want to spend too much of your valuable time talking to people who have no real urgency to make a career change/buy your product. In the beginning, talk to them anyway. I specialize in insurance, and didn't know a lot about the industry before starting my career at Hobson. I have learned so much just by asking people questions about their jobs and what certain industry terms meant-even if they might never be a candidate I could place. This was also a great way for me to build my network!

4. Remain mentally active. When you’re in it, be all in it. When you’re out, be all out. Either way, always remain mentally active. Find new ways to evolve, fun things to do, and anything to keep you in a lively, spirited state. Becoming successful is so much more than just hitting the books or picking up the phone. It is a LIFESTYLE. Of course, this doesn’t mean you don’t deserve a lazy Netflix day once in a while! However, there is a difference between relaxing and being idle.

5. Be yourself. Don’t adjust who you are to fit the mold. The goal is to evolve and grow, but only to improve upon who you already are. This is going to be one of the most important times of your life, and you will get to see what you’re really made of.

No matter what industry you work in, being the new person is rough. But, it can also be a really exciting time. Accept the challenges, benefit from the lessons, and enjoy the ride!
