The Early Bird Gets the Job Interview

The early bird gets the worm … It’s a simple concept rooted in nature and the law of supply and demand. Either get up early to find your catch, or someone else will beat you to it! This is not much unlike how humans operate.

For example:

  • In RETAIL/E-COMMERCE-- Shoppers vie to find the best deal- before the inventory and/or sales are gone.
  • IN SPORTS-- Teams draft earlier than later to get the best players.

The same rules of supply and demand apply to hiring:

  • THE BEST JOBS ARE SCARCE-- Candidates need to move on them as quickly as possible (law of scarcity at its best!)
  • TOP TALENT IS USUALLY NOT LOOKING AND IN HIGH DEMAND-- Hiring authorities need to reach them first- before someone else does.

WHAT TO DO:

To Find the Best Job Opportunities:
Typically, once a hiring manager or recruiter does an initial pre-screen of candidates and makes an interview list, they rarely look back at applications that come in later. Optimize your chances by applying as soon as you see a job, keeping your eye on job boards and news in your industry, and keeping your resume up to date-so if you get a call from a recruiter you can act fast.

To Find Best Talent:
If a candidate is not looking, we ask them: “Where do you see yourself in 2 years? 5 years?”; “Can you get there by staying where you are now?”; “What is the next logical step in your career?”; “If you could have the perfect opportunity in front of you, what would it look like?”….So many times after I ask these questions, I either hear a long pause, sigh, or, “Wow, I haven’t given it much thought…” or “Great question! …”

None of this is meant to trip up anyof our candidates or clients- I just want you to really think about what you want, and then (and only then), can we truly help you.

Moral of the story: Be PROACTIVE by starting your search early so you get the best possible “worm”!
