A Gigabyte of Prevention Is Worth a Pound of Unemployment
What does this catch phrase even mean, you’re probably wondering?!… It is pretty simple actually: GOOGLE YOURSELF BEFORE A JOB INTERVIEW!!!
I know that we all have fabulous, fun-filled, “realistic” lives outside of the workplace, and that we live in a society where we are constantly snapchatting, instagraming, facebooking, tweeting, pinning, etc… But what we tend to forget is that “the man” is in fact watching! “The man”being your potential new employer- who is entering your name into a search engine before you even show up to put your best professional foot forward, and to no surprise, guess what they see? You and your friends using your laps as a dance floor for a very attractive scantily clad woman or man, while smoking what looks to be a very “odd-smelling” cigarette! Ok, calm down, maybe that’s not your life, I’m just judging you. (Hey, so are “they”!)
I think you get the point. It’s all about perception, as you never know what someone will be thinking when they see your over-documented lifestyle and trust me- they’re judging a lot more then you know, and their opinions go straight to the top!! Why blow an interview before you even walk in the door?!
My advice, protect yourself… LOCK IT DOWN! Set your privacy settings to“NO ONE can view me anywhere. EVER.” This absolutely goes for anyone seeking a new position but even for all of you who assume your job is safe. DON’T. HR, your current boss and even your co-workers are watching and judging the life you live. Value your integrity and privacy. Sure it’s your first amendment “right” to post whatever you please, but it’s also a sure way to get fired or NOT HIRED.
I’ll end my post with some wise words to live by: “Better safe than selfie!!!!”
